What is a fat quarter of fabric?

A fat quarter of fabric is a pre-cut, cotton fabric section measuring approximately 18” x 22” (46cm x 56cm).

A quarter cut yard of fabric cut from a bolt of fabric would measure 44” x 9”. The difference is that the fat quarter is half as wide as the quarter cut, however twice as long. The fat quarter makes it easy to cut larger pieces for block construction. Fat quarter bundles are a great way of adding to your fabric stash, especially buying a fabric range that you have fallen in love with!

Fat quarters are a great way to add to your stash, and bring colours to your quilts. Scrap quilts, Sampler quilts and other smaller quilted items such as wall quilts, table runners, and placemats.

For those who are just starting their fabric stashes, consider purchasing fat quarters to start to build your collection.
